Background and Next Steps
The City of Karratha is progressing the next stage of the Kevin Richards Memorial Oval (KRMO) Masterplan, focused on delivering new multi-use hardcourts with a shade structure for the community. The engagement period provided an opportunity for community members to share feedback on key design elements before the design was finalised.
Following the community feedback period, the City is pleased to announce that 'The Hills: 3 Colours’ was the community's preferred shade structure design.
Thank you to the 170 community members who provided feedback and helped inform the design selection process, as well as the local basketball and netball representatives who attended the community information session and shared their valuable insights.
Feedback also showed strong interest in the new hardcourts, with many who play court-based sports indicating they would use the facility in future.
Collectively, your feedback has helped inform the planning and design phase of the project and will be considered as the City progresses the next stage of development. The City will commence the procurement process.

This stage (Stage 4) includes:
- New multi-use hardcourts and shade structure
Future stage (Stage 5) will include:
- Realignment of Tilbrook Close (not a through road; access via the carpark)
- Landscaping and green space improvements
- Expansion of the KRMO southern carpark (including EV charging)
These works will improve access, safety and the overall experience of the precinct.
Community members were invited to provide feedback by answering a short survey about current court usage and design preferences.
Court usage and line marking requirements were also informed through targeted engagement with sporting groups and broader community studies, including the Three Sporting Precincts Study (March 2026) and the Karratha Leisureplex Study (September 2025).
At this stage, feedback focused on the overall aesthetic design and external appearance of the facility.
