A playground audit is conducted bi-annually, as part of the City of Karratha’s Independent Playground Strategy 2022-2032.

Unfortunately, not. Each playground has a warranty which lasts 15 years and when it’s due for replacement, it cannot be sold. The City breaks down the components of the playground equipment for recycling.

In the playground renewal program, playground equipment is replaced with similar equipment; however, some playground renewals may appear quite different, and each will be varied due to innovations in playground design and equipment. Each option aims to offer a similar level of play to the current playground equipment. The playground renewal program does not include adding new equipment like extra seating, shade or BBQs, nor does it factor in complete redesigns.

Requests for additional or new facilities like BBQs are investigated and budgeted as separate capital projects. They are assessed in relation to the park’s classification and similar facilities within the neighbourhood and prioritised against maintenance and renewal requirements for existing facilities and with all other new requests. Requests for park upgrades can be sent to enquiries@karratha.wa.gov.au where they will be assessed.

The playground renewal program is for replacing ageing equipment with new similar play elements. Shade sails are not part of this schedule; however different playgrounds may be due shade sail upgrades at a similar timeframe. Shade sail requests can be made separately through the City’s Customer Request System and will be reviewed against the City’s renewal schedule, other requests, requirements and priorities identified within the existing budget.

The playground renewal program is for replacing ageing equipment with new similar play elements. Rubber soft-fall is not part of this schedule; however different playgrounds may be due rubber soft-fall upgrades at a similar timeframe. Rubber soft-fall requests can be made separately through the City’s Customer Request System and will be reviewed against other budget requests, requirements and priorities identified within the existing budget. The City considers using rubber soft fall when universal access is required to specific play elements.

Nature playgrounds are significantly more expensive than standard playgrounds and are therefore installed at regional and/or high use parks only.
