What is place planning?

Place planning is about working together to create towns we’re proud of. It brings together communities, businesses, and government to turn ideas for places into action – starting now! With the City of Karratha’s new Council Plan 2025 - 2035, setting a vision for the whole city, we’re now turning our focus to Place Plans for Roebourne (Ieramugadu), Wickham and Point Samson.

Each Place Plan will outline the community visions for their town and set clear actions, timeframes, and responsibilities to bring it to life. They will focus on aligning and delivering development and infrastructure initiatives (the ‘hardware’), while still considering the vital role of events, businesses and culture (the 'software').

By building on existing ideas and focusing on local strengths, everyone can help shape and activate the towns they want to see.

There are lots of ways you can be involved. To find out more, click on your town’s project page.

Community Listening Reports Released

February 2026

We’ve been listening — now it’s your turn to see what the community shared! The City of Karratha has released the Community Listening Reports from our Place Planning engagement in Point Samson, Ieramugadu (Roebourne), and Wickham.

These reports capture what people love about their town, what could be improved, and the ideas they’d like to see in the future. Feedback came from pop-up sessions, workshops, online engagement via What We Make It, and conversations with residents, businesses, and community groups.

What's Next

We’re working together to turn these ideas into action! In the next round of engagement with Ieramugadu (Roebourne) and Wickham, we’ll:

            • Review draft visions and place themes with the community to ensure they reflect what’s been shared
            • Check and refine potential projects together
            • Talk about timing and what’s realistic
            • Explore ways to partner and make these ideas happen

We’re not finalising a plan without you — your continued input will help shape the next steps and guide how these ideas move forward.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed so far!

December Place Planning Update

11 December 2025

The City of Karratha has now completed its first round of Place Planning engagement (held 18 to 22 August). This will help us
shape the future of Point Samson, Ieramugadu (Roebourne) and Wickham. We gathered your ideas, confirmed past priorities, and explored
new ways to strengthen and connect our communities.

Our teams recently came together for an internal workshop to refine a high-level plan based on your input and
previous strategies. This work helps ensure the actions we propose are practical and reflect what matters most to our
communities.

We will be publishing our listening reports early 2026, with our second round of engagement in Ieramugadu (Roebourne) and Wickham commencing later this year.

Point Samson Sundowner

The Point Samson community came together for a great Sundowner event on Saturday, 11 October

Residents enjoyed a relaxed night of live music from Small Town and delicious bites from the Smoky Trails food van.

It was wonderful to see neighbours and friends connecting and celebrating our amazing community spirit!

This community-led Quick Win was proudly delivered by the Point Samson Community Association with support from the City of Karratha,
as part of the Point Samson Enhancement Plan.

Wickham Public Art Project

On 25 March 2026, BLB Creative teamed up with local youth to co-design a mural that reflects the heart of Wickham.

This initiative supports community-led design and celebrates local identity. Workshops at Wickham Primary and The BASE engaged 68 young people, exploring community, self-expression, and the importance of ocean and pool life.

Guided by Sarah Roots, the mural features blues and reds inspired by the landscape.

The community will continue to have opportunities to provide feedback through pop-up, self-guided design activities at the Wickham Base and Library until 17 April 2026.

Community will be invited to participate by joining in on painting the mural on the weekend of 13-14 June 2026.

We can’t wait to see this collaborative vision come to life!
